User’s Guide For the LanguageTool Plugin For Trados Studio
Smart Spell Checker
The Smart Spell Checker is a unique spell checking module in the LanguageTool Plugin For Trados Studio. It ensures that the spell checker returns as few false positives as possible so we can catch actual mistakes and typos more easily. Smart Spell Checker also protects users from making hard-to-catch typos in untranslatables and checks alphanumeric expressions and acronyms. Furthermore, by checking both the source text and the translation, Smart Spell Checker automatically and intelligently ignores the following untranslatables:
- proper names
- product names
- untranslatables
- source UI options when bilingual translated
- acronyms
- words in capital letters
- words in mixed letters
- words containing digits
- and alphanumeric expressions.
No more tedious Ignore All
Do you spell check your translations? Are you tired of clicking the Ignore All button all the time? Have you ever missed an actual typo and just too hurriedly clicked Ignore All? Take a look at the spell checker in the LanguageTool Plugin. The spell check is done in batch mode so that you can see single and repeated errors at a glance. False-positive errors occurring more than once can be ignored as a group, and only relevant errors can be addressed.
However, there will not be as many errors as with a traditional spell checker. Why? Because the Smart Spell Checker takes into account both the source text and the translation. Therefore does not need to distract you with proper names, product names, acronyms, alphanumeric expressions, words with numbers, or foreign words, as long as they appear in identical form in the source text.
Smart control of DNT expressions
What’s more, if you make a mistake with a proper name, a product name, an acronym, an alphanumeric expression, a word with numbers, or a foreign word (generally a DNT expression or untranslatable), the Smart Spell Checker will catch the mistake. Isn’t that clever?
Adding and deleting custom user words
You can, of course, add or remove your custom words from the dictionary used for spell checking (LanguageTool uses two dictionaries for each language: a POS dictionary with all grammatical forms tagged and a dictionary for spell checking). You can now do this in a very convenient way on the LanguageTool Customization
tab.
Setting up the Smart Spell Checker
The Smart Spell Checker will work if the spell checker in LT does not ignore words with numbers, capitalized words and mixed case words. Unfortunately, LT doesn’t ignore such errors by default for all languages (not all languages have the option to ignore such words set to false). However, you can now conveniently check this and set the desired options to false on the LanguageTool Customization
tab. Below you will find the settings required by the Smart Spell Checker function. The settings shown on the Smart Spell Checker
tab are default settings that do not need to be changed.
The default LanguageTool spell checker property values for a language can be checked and adjusted using the LanguageTool Customization function. Below you will find how to look for a property file in the language list and how to change the values of these properties. Note that the spell checker module in LanguageTool may not support these three properties, and changing them may have no effect.
